The steps leading up to The Monastry in Rye gives rise to what has passed in time through the old oak door. According to an old Rye legend from around the 14th century, a monk and a beautiful young girl fell in love. He was buried alive under the monestry and could be heard singing from under the monastry until he died. She died soon after of a broken heart. It is said that his ghost still sings from under the monastry, and her ghost is sometimes seen walking up the cobblestone street next to the monastry. |
